Last winter I had a fever for 5 days and put off seeing anyone. I didn't know where to
go. My employer's insurance card was in a drawer and I had never read what it covered. When I
finally went, I spent more time on paperwork than with the doctor. The forms asked things I couldn't answer.
Which hospitals take my insurance directly, which ones want money upfront. Nobody had told me. At the pharmacy it
got worse. I asked for a medicine I use at home and the girl had never heard the name.
I stood there describing symptoms like a bad game of charades. Finally she gave me something else. It worked,
but I still don't know if it was the same thing. I now keep the generic name on my phone.
Small stuff like that decides how a bad week goes for you. Since then a few people have messaged me
with the same worries. Hospitals, insurance papers, finding medicines. Most had no idea where to start until something went wrong.
That's why I'm putting this here. I'd like to hear your stories. Did you have a cashless treatment, or did
you have to pay upfront and wait? How did the emergency room treat you as a foreigner? Did they ask
for insurance first? What documents did you carry? I've heard it changes even between branches of the same hospital chain.
I've heard both kinds of stories, smooth ones and ones where someone paid a big amount and chased money for weeks.
It seems to depend on the country, the hospital and sometimes who is at the desk that day.
What would you do differently next time? Write it down here for the next person who's scared and alone.
