2 years back my father had a bad fall at home and they admitted him in a private hospital in Hyderabad.
I flew in from abroad the next day. He was in for about 5 days. Scans, room, medicines, the usual.
Discharge day, the billing counter hands me a total of ₹5.4 lakh. I just stood there looking at it.
Even with all the scans, something felt off. So I asked for an itemised breakdown before paying.
They said pay first, the detailed bill you can see later. As if that's a normal thing to say.
That made me angrier than the amount, and yes, I raised my voice with the management guy.
Took a while, but a manager finally told the cashier to print what I'd been asking for from the start.
I sat in the waiting area going through it line by line while my mother kept asking what's wrong.
4 items on there for treatment and services he never got. Just those 4 came to about ₹1.35 lakh.
Staff first said no no, he was given all of this. Ok, show me the records for each one. Separately.
Then suddenly it's probably a mistake, new cashier, not trained properly on the system yet.
I said remove them now or I'm going to the police and the media with this bill. They removed them.
Then they gave another ₹11,000 discount on top, without me even asking. Make of that what you want.
Paid about ₹3.95 lakh finally. Still a huge amount, but nowhere near what they started with.
What worries me is next time. I'm abroad most of the year and my parents won't argue with a billing counter.
If you've dealt with this from outside the country, how did you manage it?
