A close friend of mine uploaded his CV on a popular job portal about three months ago, hoping for something abroad.
Within a week a man called, saying he was a consultant with a Dubai company that wanted his exact profile.
The call sounded professional. He knew my friend's experience, his last salary and even the name of his old employer.
Of course he did, it was all sitting on the portal, but my friend took it as proof they were real.
Then came the interviews. Two video calls, a man in a tie, an office background, and questions about his work.
A few days later he got a selection message with a salary of 3,500 dirhams, food and accommodation included.
Everything moved fast, and that is the trick. The faster it moves, the less time you have to ask anyone.
That same evening the consultant said the offer was confirmed, but a registration fee of 27,000 rupees was needed.
My friend paid it, because by then he had already told his family.
4 days later came the second demand, 35,300 rupees for verification from the Indian consulate in Dubai.
They said it would be refunded after he joined work, and sent a receipt-looking PDF with a stamp on it.
He did not know that a consulate does not take payments for a private company's job offer.
Then the medical. Another amount, and another reason why it had to be paid today or the visa slot would go.
By now he had borrowed from two relatives, and every payment came with a new promise that this was the last one.
Total gone was around 1,25,000 rupees. Money he had saved over two years, plus what he borrowed.
The consultant kept calling for another week, then the phone was switched off.
The company website was copied from a real firm, and the interview office was probably a rented room.
The portal account that found him is gone now, and the portal only said they host the listings.
He went to the cyber crime office, and they took a complaint, but told him getting cash back is very hard.
What hurts him most is not only the money, it is that he had told everyone he was leaving.
Please remember these points. A real job never asks you to pay for registration, verification, visa slot or medical upfront.
Real employers pay for the medical and visa themselves, and a refund promise after joining is the oldest line they use.
Check the company on its official website using a number you find yourself, never one the consultant gives you.
Say no to anyone who rushes you, and if it feels too smooth, stop and ask someone.
