🎁 Sending a gift home to Hyderabad from the US, which courier and how bad is customs?

My mother's birthday is next month, and I want to send her a proper gift from here for the first time. I've been in New Jersey for almost three years and I've never shipped anything home, I always carry things when I visit. This time I'm not flying back until March, so a courier is the only option I've got. And the more I read about it online, the more confused I get. The one time a friend sent a parcel to his family in Tolichowki, it was stuck with customs for almost three weeks. His parents got a call asking for Aadhaar and PAN details, and then a duty charge they weren't expecting. It was a smartwatch and some perfume, nothing crazy, and the duty was a lot more than he'd planned for. He's told me never to assume that marking something as a gift means it's free of duty, because it isn't. From what I can tell, DHL and FedEx are fast but expensive, maybe three to five days to Hyderabad. USPS is much cheaper, but it gets handed over to India Post at the other end and the tracking goes quiet. I've also seen cargo companies that collect from your door, but I don't know anyone here who's used one. I'm sending a shawl, a small handbag and some chocolates, so nothing electronic this time. So for anyone who's done this recently, which courier did you use and what did it cost you? Did your family have to pay anything at the door when it arrived? And are there things you'd avoid sending altogether, like perfume or anything with a battery in it? I'd like this one to reach her on time and in one piece, for once.

Thanks both. Khaja Meer, I didn't know cargo companies from the Gulf had US versions, I'll ask around. There's a Hyderabad group on WhatsApp in New Jersey. I'll post there tonight and see who they use. Shafiullah, I'll check the limits before I book anything. Nothing electronic going this time, only the shawl, bag and chocolates. Will update this thread once she gets it. Fingers crossed it's not 3 weeks.

Adding to what Khaja Meer said, if you're sending money along with gifts, using a registered remittance app is usually safer and cheaper than carrying cash through a middleman. For the gifts themselves, I've had good experience with a couple of the bigger international courier apps too, generally reliable and reasonably priced. Just make sure to check customs limits carefully before shipping anything electronic, since that's where people usually run into unexpected extra charges.

When I was in Riyadh I used to send gifts and essentials back home through a few trusted Hyderabadi cargo services that specialize in Gulf-to-India shipments - much cheaper and more reliable than the standard international couriers for things like clothes, dry fruits, and small electronics. For urgent stuff though, international courier services worked fine, just costlier. Would recommend asking around your local Hyderabadi community group in whichever city you are in, they usually know the best cargo agent.
