Grew up in a household that was firmly team chai, my grandmother made it a certain specific way every single morning, strong, boiled properly with milk rather than just splashed in at the end, and for most of my life that was simply what mornings meant to me without any real alternative crossing my mind seriously. Moved in with a roommate a couple of years back who was equally firmly team filter coffee, and slowly, almost without noticing it happening, I started switching over most mornings myself.
What actually convinced me was less about taste initially and more about the ritual of it, the whole process of the decoction dripping through the filter slowly while everything else in the kitchen gets set up feels more deliberate somehow than just dunking a tea bag or boiling a pan of chai on the stove for a few minutes. The actual coffee itself took a few weeks to properly grow on me, but now going back to chai in the morning feels almost too light, like it does not quite land the same way for me anymore this early.
That said, chai still wins completely by early evening, something about filter coffee at four or five in the afternoon just feels slightly wrong to me, whereas chai fits that specific slot perfectly the way it never quite managed to fit the early morning slot for me personally over these past couple of years.
My mother thinks this whole switch is a phase, my roommate obviously considers it a permanent conversion and takes a bit too much credit for it whenever it comes up. Genuinely curious how this splits among people here, is it mostly a family habit you just inherited and never questioned, or did people actually switch sides at some point in adult life the way I apparently did without fully planning to?
Which one actually wakes you up properly, and has anyone else switched sides as an adult after growing up firmly in the other camp?
