Every January I wrote a big list of goals. By March I'd forgotten
where I kept the list. For about 5 years that was my pattern.
Gym, reading, savings, all of it, finished by the second week of February.
Last year I tried something dull. One tiny habit, 10 minutes of walking
after dinner, nothing else. No tracking app, no new shoes, no announcement to
the family. I just started and kept doing it. The first month showed nothing.
My weight didn't change and my energy didn't feel different. That's where I'd
always quit before. When nothing seems to happen, the habit feels like a waste
of time. What got me through was the routine, not the mood. Shoes by
the door, alarm at 9. Some nights I didn't feel like it at all.
I walked anyway, slowly, and it still counted. I also stopped checking my progress
every day. It made me anxious and I'd quit if I saw nothing new.
Now I look once a month. On the first Sunday, with a cup
of tea, I just see how it went. Looking at a whole month
shows patterns that a single day hides. Weekends were my weak spot, for example.
So I moved the walk earlier on weekends. Small fix, and it made
a difference to how consistent I was. A friend from my cricket group
started walking too. We never talk about it, we just send a thumbs up.
That tiny nudge helps. Knowing someone else is also doing something dull and regular keeps me honest.
It's been 11 months. I'm not a new person, but I walk and I sleep better than before.
Has anyone else done better with small, slow habits than with big resolutions? Tell me what yours were.
