My friends are tired of me asking this, but which place in India have you never visited? Mine
is Kashmir. Gulmarg to be exact. I'm 35 and it's still just a wallpaper on my phone. I've
been working in Khobar for years now, and every trip home to Hyderabad has some family function packed in.
So Kashmir keeps losing to weddings, to Ramzan timing, to leave that gets cancelled 2 days before. The dream
started when I was a kid. Hyderabad summers were brutal and my school had one poster of snow mountains.
I used to stare at it during maths class. Later the films made it worse, all those
songs in white fields. I've planned the trip with friends 4 times. Every plan died in the group
chat before anyone booked a single ticket. Last year 2 of them finally went without me. I
saw the photos and felt strangely jealous for a week. My wife says stop talking and book it.
She has her own list, Munnar and Coorg and a tea garden somewhere. Part
of me is scared the real place won't match the poster in my head. That's
silly, I know. The friends who went said it was better than the photos. One
of them cried at the snow, he told me. I don't believe the crying part
but I do believe the rest of it. His photos looked unreal. So I'm putting
it here so somebody can hold me to it. Next winter, 1 week, no excuses.
If you've been to Gulmarg, tell me what month to go. I can only take leave
in the cooler part of the year. And tell me the place you keep postponing too.
It's the weekend and I'd like something lighter than the usual threads. I'll go
first on the excuse list. Leave, Ramzan, friends, and a fear of cold hands.
