Somewhere along the way, I became the person in my family everyone turns to for practical help, sorting my parents' insurance paperwork, helping a cousin figure out a loan application, being the one who actually drives someone to an appointment when nobody else has the time or apparently the inclination to step in themselves for whatever reason at that particular moment.
I do not mind helping generally, genuinely, but I have started noticing that while everyone comes to me with their specific problems, almost nobody actually asks how I am doing myself in any real depth, conversations with me tend to stay focused on whatever they need help with rather than genuinely checking in on my own life or how I am actually managing everything I am juggling on my own end too.
Mentioned this once to my mother, fairly gently, and her response was that I seem so capable and put together that people probably assume I do not need the same kind of checking in that others in the family clearly do, which I understand as an explanation, but it does not really make the actual feeling of being consistently overlooked in that specific way feel any better or less isolating over time.
I went through a genuinely difficult stretch myself about six months ago, a health scare that turned out fine but that scared me considerably at the time, and it was honestly striking how few people in my own family actually followed up on it afterward once the initial immediate concern had passed, compared to how consistently I show up for every single one of them whenever something comes up on their specific end.
I do not want to stop helping entirely, that is genuinely part of who I actually am and I do get real satisfaction from being useful to people I care about. But I would genuinely like to feel like the effort flows both ways at least occasionally, rather than being the reliable one who apparently never needs anything back in return from anyone.
Has anyone else found themselves in this specific role within their own family, and did you find an actual way to shift it, or does being the practical one just permanently mean being the one nobody thinks to check on unprompted?
