I am thirty four years old, have travelled reasonably comfortably before, both for leisure and shorter domestic work trips, but next month I have my first solo international work trip, four days in a country I have never visited, attending a conference on behalf of my company, and the anxiety building up around it feels disproportionate to what should honestly be a fairly manageable trip on paper.
It is not really the flight or the hotel booking itself that worries me, all of that is straightforward enough logistically and already sorted well in advance. What actually keeps circling in my head is smaller, more specific things, navigating an unfamiliar airport alone with tight connecting time, figuring out local transport from the airport to the hotel late at night in an unfamiliar city, and generally just being entirely on my own if something small goes wrong rather than having a colleague or family member physically there to help sort it out immediately.
I mentioned this anxiety to a colleague who travels for work fairly often, and he seemed genuinely surprised, said solo trips like this become second nature after just the first one or two, which is probably true, but does not do much to actually calm the specific nervousness I am feeling right now before having gone through it myself even once.
My partner has been supportive but also gently teases me a little about it, pointing out that plenty of people my age have already done far more solo international travel than this by now, which I know is meant kindly but occasionally lands slightly differently than intended when I am already feeling a bit behind on this particular kind of independence.
I know once I am actually there and moving through the trip itself, most of this will probably fade fairly quickly. Has anyone else felt genuinely anxious before a first solo international work trip specifically, even with prior travel experience otherwise, and did it actually get easier the moment you were finally there?
