Six weeks of solid preparation for the last exam. I walked in knowing the material cold.
Then the paper was in front of me and for the first four minutes I could
not remember my own roll number, let alone the answer to question one. This has happened
enough times now that I know it is not really about preparation. Mock tests at home,
practice interviews with a friend pretending to be stern, timed papers done alone in my room
with the door shut, all of that goes fine. Something else takes over the moment it counts.
Heart rate first, then the thoughts start moving faster than I can follow them, and somewhere in there recall
just switches off completely, like a breaker tripping in a house you cannot find the fuse box for. It
has cost me things. An interview two years ago for a role I wanted badly, where I know I
could have answered better than I did, where I fumbled a question about my own final year project of
all things. A paper I walked out of certain I knew more than what ended up on the page,
only to remember the exact answer clearly on the bus ride home, which somehow makes it worse rather than better.
I have tried the usual list, breathing exercises before walking in, arriving early so
there is no last minute rush, telling myself calming things in my head that never
quite land when it matters, writing down key points on my palm even though I
know that is more superstition than strategy at this point. None of it touches
the actual four minutes where everything goes blank. I still do not have a real
fix for that part, just a longer list of things that have not worked yet.
