My divorce finalized just over two years ago now, and I genuinely thought by this point the questions would have faded into something closer to background noise rather than still being a fairly reliable topic at nearly every single family gathering or wedding I attend, someone new always seems to ask, framed as genuine concern, but landing more like curiosity about details that honestly are not really theirs to know in any real detail.
I have developed a fairly short, deliberately vague standard response by now, something along the lines of things simply did not work out and we both decided it was better to move on separately, which is completely true without actually revealing any of the more specific and genuinely personal details behind the actual decision itself. Most people accept that short answer and move on themselves fairly quickly, but a smaller number keep gently probing further, clearly hoping for something more specific and dramatic than what I am actually willing to share with them directly.
What genuinely surprises me most is how differently my ex husband seems to be treated at these exact same gatherings we sometimes both still attend for extended family reasons, people rarely seem to ask him the same probing questions I keep getting asked myself, which makes me wonder whether some of this specific curiosity directed at me carries an unspoken assumption about who was actually more at fault in the whole situation to begin with.
My closer family has genuinely been supportive throughout this whole process and does not push for details themselves the way more distant relatives and family friends consistently seem to, which I am genuinely grateful for even while navigating the more casual acquaintances still bringing it up repeatedly at nearly every specific occasion that comes up.
Two years feels like it should be enough time for this to have faded into the background by now, but apparently divorce still carries enough social weight in these settings that people feel entitled to ask fairly directly regardless of how much actual time has genuinely passed since it all happened.
Has anyone else navigated this specific kind of ongoing curiosity long after their own divorce, and did it eventually stop, or does it just become something you get better at deflecting quickly each specific time it comes up again?
