It's been two years and one month since the papers were finalized, and I really thought by now the
questions would have faded into something people just knew not to bring up anymore. They haven't. Someone new asks at
nearly every wedding or family function I go to, usually dressed up as concern, landing more like curiosity about
details that were never really theirs to have in the first place, details I've stopped explaining to anyone outside my
closest circle. I've got a short answer by now, something along the lines of it didn't work out and
we both decided to move on, which is true without handing over anything personal about who did what or why.
Most people take that and drop it within a minute or two, satisfied enough to
move to the next topic. A smaller number keep circling back with a follow up
question, clearly hoping for something with more drama in it than what I'm willing to
give them at a cousin's wedding reception, standing near the buffet with a plate in hand.
What gets under my skin most is how differently my ex husband seems to get treated
at these same events, when we still end up at the same ones for extended family
reasons neither of us can really avoid. Nobody corners him with the same questions, not once that
I've seen in two years of watching this play out. It's hard not to notice the
assumption sitting underneath that difference, about who was really more at fault here to begin with.
Two years feels like it should be enough time for this to go quiet on its own.
Has anyone else found this kind of thing just keeps going, no
matter how much time passes, or does it eventually run out of steam?
