Went to my third friend's engagement function this year last weekend, and somewhere between the photos and the small talk I found myself doing that thing where you compare your own life against everyone else's highlight reel, even though I know logically that is not a fair comparison to make. Most of my close friends from college are either engaged, recently married, or settled into stable jobs with a clear five year plan, and I am still figuring out what I actually want to do career wise at twenty seven.
It is not that I am unhappy exactly, I like my current job well enough, have decent friends here in the city, just genuinely do not have the same sense of a clear next step that everyone else around me seems to have. My mother has started gently bringing up marriage more often too, not in a pushy way exactly, but enough that I notice the pattern, especially right after these functions when relatives inevitably ask her about my plans.
Tried talking to one close friend about this feeling, and she admitted she felt the exact same way about a year before she actually got engaged, said the timeline just eventually clicked into place for her without much conscious effort on her part, which is somewhat comforting but also makes me wonder if I am just supposed to wait for that same click to happen for me too.
Some days it genuinely does not bother me at all, and other days, usually right after one of these functions specifically, it quietly creeps back in for a few days before fading again. Not sure if this is just a normal phase everyone goes through at this specific age or if I am actually missing something that everyone else figured out earlier.
Anyone else gone through this particular kind of comparison spiral around your late twenties, watching friends settle into their next life stage while you are still figuring yours out? Curious whether it actually resolves on its own eventually or if it just becomes less loud over time regardless.
