Third engagement function this year, last Saturday, and somewhere between the photos and the small talk I caught myself doing the
thing where you measure your life against everyone else's best angle, down to the venue and the outfit and the ring itself.
I know it's not a fair comparison. Doesn't stop me from making it anyway, every single time,
in the car on the way home. Most of my college friends are either married, engaged, or settled
into a job with a five year plan already sketched out on paper, promotions lined up and everything.
I'm twenty seven and still figuring out what I want to do next, some weeks more than others.
It's not that I'm unhappy. I like my job fine, have decent people around me here, a life that
mostly works on any ordinary Tuesday. My mother has started bringing up marriage more, gently, but often enough that
I've noticed the pattern, especially right after one of these functions when some relative asks her about my
plans before the appetizers even arrive. I keep wondering if there's a click that just hasn't happened for me
yet, the way it seems to have for everyone else in this group, like a switch I haven't found.
Some days none of this bothers me at all, and I can go a full week without thinking about
it once. Other days, usually the day after a function like this one, it creeps back for a bit before
fading again on its own, quieter each time it returns, less loud than it was the year before. I've started
leaving these functions a little earlier than I used to, straight after the cake, before the questions really get going.
Does this ever fully stop, or does it just get quieter with time the way most things eventually do?
