Left my job about four years ago after our second child was born, which felt like the right decision at the time given how expensive reliable childcare would have been compared to what I was actually earning back then, but I have slowly started noticing how that decision has quietly shifted the balance of basically every conversation in our marriage since I stopped having my own independent income.
It is not that my husband is deliberately unkind about money, he does not restrict what I spend on basic household things or the kids, but bigger decisions, where we live, what we prioritize financially, even smaller things like whether I take a weekend trip with my own friends, all somehow end up needing a level of justification from me that I do not think would exist the same way if I were still earning my own money separately.
Brought this up with him gently once, tried explaining that I felt like I needed permission for things that used to just be my own decision before, and he genuinely seemed confused by the framing, said he never meant to make me feel that way and that of course I can do whatever I want, but somehow the pattern has not actually changed much since that conversation even though I do believe he meant what he said sincerely.
Have been quietly looking into part time work options that could fit around the kids' school schedule, mostly because I think having even a small independent income again might genuinely change how these conversations feel for me internally, regardless of whether the actual money makes a huge practical difference to our overall household budget.
Not looking to frame this as a bigger crisis than it actually is, our marriage is otherwise fine in most ways that matter, just genuinely curious if anyone else who stepped away from working for a while has navigated getting back some sense of financial independence, and whether it actually changed the dynamic the way I am hoping it might for me.
