Four years since I left my job, right after our second was born, back when daycare
would have cost more than I was even earning at the time, at least on paper. That
decision made sense back then. It's been quietly shaping every money conversation in our marriage ever since,
in small ways I didn't predict when I made it. My husband isn't unkind about it. He
doesn't restrict grocery money or what I spend on the kids, not even close, and never has.
But bigger things, where we live, a weekend trip with my own friends, somehow all need a
version of justification from me that I don't think would exist if I still had my own paycheck
coming in every month. I brought this up with him once, carefully, on a drive back from
his parents' place last winter. He seemed really thrown by it, said of course I can do what
I want, that he never meant it that way. The pattern hasn't really moved since that conversation,
even though I believe he meant it when he said it, sincerely, sitting right there in the car.
I've started quietly looking at part time work that could fit around school pickup, mostly to see if having any
income of my own changes how these conversations feel from my side, regardless of what it does to the household
budget in any real way. Sent out two applications last week without telling him yet, partly to see if anything comes
of it first before making it a whole conversation. Nothing dramatic here. Our marriage is fine in most ways that
matter, we still laugh at the same stupid things every night, still split the last slice of whatever's in the fridge.
Just tired of doing math in my head before I ask for
anything, even something small like a haircut or a new pair of shoes.
