My sister in law said it best without meaning to: why are the
two of you fighting in front of everyone again. That was the moment
I realized our marriage had started happening in public. It used to be simple.
My wife and I would disagree about something small, money, a relative's comment, whose turn
it was to call the electrician, and we would sort it out between ourselves within
the hour, sometimes with an argument, usually just with one of us backing down first.
That system worked fine for the four years before we moved in with
my parents last winter. That does not happen anymore, not in this house.
The moment voices go up even slightly, my mother appears in the doorway with an opinion, my brother weighs
in from the next room, and within ten minutes what started as a two person disagreement about whose cousin to
invite to a function has turned into a five person discussion about respect, tradition, and who is right in general.
My parents grew up believing a joint family runs on everyone having a say. My wife and I are trying to run a
marriage. Those two ideas do not fit neatly inside the same house, and I am the one standing in the middle of both
every single time, trying to keep my wife from feeling ganged up on without making my own parents feel disrespected in their own home.
Last week I started walking my wife out to the terrace the second a
disagreement started, just so we could finish a sentence without an audience. It bought
us maybe two calm days before someone downstairs asked why we kept disappearing every evening.
Nobody in this house has ever once said sorry after one of these pile ons, least of
all me. Does anyone else in a joint family setup manage to keep a private argument private,
or is that just not something that exists once you are living under one roof with everyone else?
