I was looking for my husband’s old insurance papers on a normal Tuesday. He had one drawer he always kept locked.
Under some old bills and photos I found a marriage certificate. His name, and next to it a woman called Ananya.
It was dated eight months earlier. We’ve been married twelve years.
I read it over and over. I had never heard him say that name, not once.
Everyone thinks Arjun is the calm, steady one. Good father, careful with money, still brings me jasmine on our anniversary.
I believed that too.
I didn’t say anything that night. He ate dinner, laughed with our daughter, took his calls like always.
I just kept watching him and thinking, how long have you been acting like this?
The next morning I followed him. He drove all the way across the city to an apartment block and went up to the second floor.
A young woman opened the door. She looked tired and had a baby on her shoulder. He hugged her.
I didn’t make a scene. I didn’t even cry. I just turned around and went home.
When he got back I showed him the certificate. First he said it wasn’t what it looked like.
Then it was stress, he was lonely, it was “a mistake.”
I told him a mistake isn’t a wedding, a signed certificate and a baby you’ve been hiding. He built a whole second life.
Then he asked me to keep quiet. For our daughter, for his name, for the family’s peace.
That’s when it really hit me. Even after getting caught, he still wanted me to be the one carrying it.
So I took the certificate, the photos and the bank papers to a lawyer.
The lawyer told me a second marriage while the first is still going is void under the Hindu Marriage Act, and bigamy is a crime.
It used to be Section 494 of the IPC, and now it’s Section 82 of the new BNS. It means up to seven years in jail and a fine,
or up to ten if he hid the first marriage from the second wife, which he did.
The weeks after that were hard. Relatives whispering, people looking at me with pity, Arjun angry at me like I’d done something wrong.
But I wasn’t going to hide in shame over something he did.
When the case got to court, Ananya was there too. Not against me. She’d been lied to as well, and we both told the truth.
I didn’t get my marriage back, or the one I thought I had. But my daughter’s future is safe and I can still look people in the eye.
If anyone here has been through something like this, how did you handle family and relatives afterwards?
