Both my parents are in their late seventies now, generally managing on their own day to day, but over the past year there have been enough small health scares, a fall that needed stitches, a cardiology appointment that turned into three follow up visits, that I have effectively become their primary point of contact for anything medical, all while working a full time job that does not really have much flexibility built into it for sudden weekday hospital runs.
My manager has been reasonably understanding when something genuinely urgent comes up, but I am acutely aware of using up goodwill each time I need to step out mid afternoon for an unplanned appointment, and I have started noticing myself downplaying how serious something actually is when explaining it at work, just to avoid seeming like someone constantly asking for time off for family reasons.
I do have a sibling, but he lives in a different city entirely and mostly contributes financially rather than being physically present for the actual day to day coordination, which I understand given distance but still leaves me handling the logistics almost entirely on my own most weeks. We have not had a fully honest conversation about rebalancing this, mostly because every time it comes up, it turns into him offering to send more money rather than actually discussing the time and mental load side of things specifically.
Some days I genuinely feel like I am managing two separate full time responsibilities, my actual job and coordinating my parents' care, and the exhaustion from that combination has started showing up in smaller ways, forgetting things at work I normally would not, feeling irritable with my own partner over minor things that are not really about them at all.
I know this stage is temporary in some sense, though I am not sure temporary is the right word when I genuinely do not know how long it actually lasts. Has anyone found an actual way to balance a demanding job with aging parents needing more support, or does it mostly just come down to accepting the exhaustion until the situation itself eventually changes?
