Got laid off from my job three weeks ago along with about a dozen others when the company restructured a whole department overnight, and I still have not told my parents about it. Every single day I get dressed like I am going to office, leave the house around the same time, and just spend most of the day at a coffee shop nearby applying for roles or sometimes just sitting there pretending to be productive because going home too early would raise questions.
Part of the reason is that my parents had just finished telling relatives how well the job was going, mentioned the recent hike I got a few months back at some family function, and I genuinely do not know how to walk that back without it turning into a whole discussion involving extended family opinions on what I should do next. My father especially tends to get anxious about financial stability in a way that spirals quickly, and I did not want to add that stress onto him right now, though I recognize that reasoning is probably more about avoiding my own discomfort than actually protecting him.
The savings I have will last maybe two more months if I am careful, and I have been applying steadily, had two interviews already though nothing has come through yet. Part of me keeps hoping I will land something before I actually have to say anything at all, which would let this whole period just quietly disappear without ever becoming a conversation, but that hope is starting to feel less realistic with each passing week.
I know logically that hiding this is probably making things harder on myself than it needs to be, having to maintain an entire fake routine every day is honestly more exhausting than the job search itself some days, but every time I think about actually sitting down and telling them I lose my nerve and just decide to wait one more week.
Has anyone else gone through something similar, keeping a job loss or some other major change quiet from family for a while? Curious how you eventually brought it up and whether it went anywhere close to as badly as you were expecting it to.
