For years, every argument in our house ended the same way. My wife would say, "I will leave you and take the children."
It didn't matter what the fight was about. Money, me coming home late from work, the kids' school fees.
I love her and our two kids. But after a while I started feeling scared in my own home.
I stopped giving my opinion on anything. I agreed to whatever she said, even when I was tired or worried,
just so I wouldn't hear those words again. My friends said I'd gone quiet.
One day my daughter asked me, "Papa, why do you always say sorry even when Mama is the one who's angry?"
Then one night we argued about a family trip. She packed a suitcase and said she was leaving the next morning
with the kids and I would never see them again. This time I didn't argue. I booked a hotel room and left.
The next day, while she was packing the kids' clothes, she found an old diary of mine.
I'd written in it about being scared of losing my family, about feeling lonely,
and how every time she said divorce I felt worthless. There was also a letter I'd written to her
and never given her, asking if she'd see a counsellor with me.
She called me that evening and asked me to come home. Not to fight, just to talk.
She told me her parents used to fight the same way, with shouting and threats,
and she grew up thinking that was normal.
We saw a marriage counsellor the next week. She said sorry and promised not to use divorce or the kids as a threat again.
I agreed to say what I'm feeling instead of keeping quiet and going along with everything.
We made one rule. If an argument gets bad, either of us can take a break, but nobody mentions divorce or taking the kids.
Home feels calmer now, and I'm not scared to speak anymore.
Has anyone else lived with a partner who kept threatening to leave?
