My wife stayed home for the past seven years raising our two kids, a decision we made together at the time and one I genuinely still believe was right for our family during those specific early years. Now that our younger child has started school, she has started talking seriously about returning to work, updating her resume, reaching out to a couple of old contacts from before she left the workforce entirely.
I know logically I should be supportive, and on the surface I genuinely am, encouraging her out loud, helping her prepare for a couple of informal conversations she has had recently. But privately I have noticed a real, uncomfortable feeling underneath that support, something close to actual threat, worrying about what it means for our household dynamic if she starts earning her own income again after years of me being the sole financial provider for our family.
I do not think this feeling is really rational, she is not planning anything that threatens our marriage directly, and more household income would genuinely help us reach some goals we have discussed together for years now. But some part of me has apparently gotten used to a specific dynamic where I am the provider and she manages the home almost entirely, and the idea of that shifting even partially now genuinely unsettles me more than I expected it actually would.
Have not told her about this specific feeling directly, mostly out of some genuine embarrassment about how it actually sounds described out loud like this, worried it makes me look insecure or somehow unsupportive of her own goals and ambitions in a way I genuinely do not want to actually be toward her.
Trying to work through this on my own before it actually shows up as some kind of subtle resistance in how I behave toward her plans, since I do not want my own specific insecurity here to become the reason she hesitates on something she clearly wants for herself.
Has anyone else felt this specific kind of quiet threat when a partner's role shifted after years of a fixed dynamic, and how did you actually work through it before it affected the relationship itself?
