Why does every family gathering start with her name within the first twenty minutes? My cousin
Ayesha is four years younger than me. She moved abroad right after her master's, and within a
few years she had a good job, her own apartment, and enough saved by twenty eight that
she helped her parents redo their kitchen back home, new tiles and all. I like her. We
get along fine when it is just the two of us, and she has never once acted
like she is better than anyone in our own conversations, on the phone or otherwise. It is
everyone else. An aunt mentioning her promotion. An uncle asking, in front of the whole room,
why I never thought about moving abroad at her age. It is never really about her. It
is about using her as the stick to measure me against, at every wedding, every housewarming, every
random Sunday lunch. I stayed close to my parents on purpose. They are in their seventies now,
and I wanted to be around for this stage of their lives instead of managing it over
a screen from another country. That was a real decision I made, not something that just happened
to me by default because I lacked ambition or could not get a visa. My own
parents do not push the comparison themselves. If anything they wave it off when a relative leans
on it too hard in front of them, and I notice that and appreciate it more than
I have ever said out loud. Still, I have started bracing myself before I even walk into
a house where I know her name is going to come up within the first twenty minutes.
That bracing is its own kind of tired, separate from whatever the comment itself does to me.
