My father and I stopped speaking when I was nineteen, after a fairly serious falling out following my parents' divorce that I do not want to get into in full detail here, but it was significant enough that eleven years passed with essentially zero direct contact between us, not even a message on a birthday during that entire stretch of time.
Two months ago, out of nowhere, he sent a message through a mutual cousin asking if I would be open to a call, no explanation beyond wanting to talk after all this time. I sat with that message for almost a full week before actually responding, going back and forth between curiosity and a genuine reluctance to reopen something I had mostly made peace with simply not having in my life anymore by this point.
We eventually did talk, a long, fairly emotional call that covered some of what happened back then from his side of things, an account that did not fully match how I remembered certain events, though enough of it did align that I could not entirely dismiss what he was saying either. He did apologize, which honestly surprised me given how things ended originally, though the apology felt somewhat general rather than addressing specific things I actually needed acknowledged from my side.
We have spoken twice more since that first call, shorter conversations, both of us clearly being careful with each other in a way that feels appropriate given how much time has passed without any real trust rebuilt yet between us. My mother, who I am still close with, has mixed feelings about this reconnection that she has not fully hidden, though she has not directly told me not to continue it either.
I genuinely do not know where this goes from here, whether eleven years of silence can actually be meaningfully bridged at this point or whether we simply end up with some lighter version of a relationship going forward. Has anyone reconnected with an estranged parent after a similarly long gap, and did it end up being worth reopening looking back now?
