Four times in six years, I have said yes to a relative asking for
money. A cousin needed a hospital deposit covered fast, forty thousand rupees transferred before
I had even asked which hospital. An uncle needed a chunk of cash to
start a business selling auto parts near Secunderabad. Two others, smaller amounts, gone the
same day I was asked for them, barely a full conversation attached to either request.
Only one of those four has been paid back in full, and only after I brought it
up twice myself, the second time somewhat awkwardly at a cousin's engagement of all places. The rest
turned into a quiet arrangement where nobody mentions it anymore, but I notice it sitting under every
conversation with those relatives at weddings and functions now, a small awkwardness that was not there before
any of this started. What bothers me most is not the total, though it adds up to
more than I like admitting even to myself some nights when I am going through the bank statement.
It is that I never once asked a single question before saying yes.
No timeline, no reason why nobody else in the family had covered it first.
Just yes, and a transfer within the hour every single time it was asked
of me. My wife pointed out once that I say yes automatically to anyone
who frames a request as urgent, and she is right, I have checked the
pattern against every one of these four times since and it holds up exactly.
I do not know how to change that without it feeling like I am
rejecting the whole idea of family instead of just one bad habit I picked up
somewhere along the way, one transfer at a time, one urgent phone call after another.
