The second my head hits the pillow it's like someone flips a switch and every unfinished thought
from the day lines up to get a turn, the email I should have phrased better, the
argument with my sister that ended nowhere, whether I locked the back door, a bill I forgot
about until just now at midnight, an old conversation from years ago that resurfaces for no clear
reason, and none of it is urgent, none of it needs solving at this hour, but my
brain treats bedtime like the only appointment it's been waiting for all day to keep. I'll lie
there for an hour, sometimes more, turning over the same three or four thoughts in a slightly
different order each time, and even when sleep finally comes it feels thin, like I never fully
went under, and I wake up foggy no matter how many hours the clock says I got,
dragging through the morning on coffee that barely helps. During the day these same worries barely register,
I'm too busy to notice them, which makes me think it was never really about the worries
themselves, just that bedtime is the only stretch of quiet my mind gets all day and it's
decided that's when the entire backlog gets processed, all at once, whether I want it to or
not. I've tried the standard fixes, phone away an hour before, a notebook by the bed to
dump thoughts onto paper before turning the light off, one of those breathing apps that plays ocean
sounds on a timer, and each one works for a night or two before the pattern crawls
back exactly the way it was, patient and unbothered by my efforts. Some weeks are worse than
others, usually the ones where something at work is unresolved or I've had a fight with someone
I care about, and on those nights I basically know by nine o clock that it's going
to be a long one before I've even brushed my teeth or turned down the sheets. Anyway.
