Have been in a relationship for almost two years now with someone from a different community than what my parents would probably expect for me, and every single time the topic of marriage comes up at home in a general sense, my stomach drops a little because I know eventually I will have to actually say something specific rather than keep deflecting with vague answers about being too busy with work right now.
My parents are not extremist by any means, they have friends from different backgrounds, seem reasonably open minded in most everyday conversations, but marriage within the community has always been treated as a given in our house, never really questioned or discussed as an actual choice, more just an assumed default that nobody bothered explaining because it never needed explaining before now.
Have rehearsed how I might actually bring this up more times than I can count, different versions depending on my father's mood that particular day, whether my mother is around too since she tends to get emotional quickly and that changes how the conversation might go. Every single version I imagine ends somewhere between initial shock and a longer, more difficult conversation that I keep pushing further into the future rather than actually having.
The person I am with has been patient about this honestly, more patient than I probably deserve given how long I have been saying just a little more time without any actual plan behind that statement. We have talked about what happens if my parents genuinely do not come around eventually, and neither of us has a clean answer for that scenario, which is its own separate source of anxiety sitting quietly underneath everything else.
Not really asking for a script to say the exact right thing, mostly just wondering if anyone here has actually gone through a similar conversation with their own family and come out the other side of it, however that conversation actually went for you. Would help to know it is survivable even when it does not go smoothly at first.
