My cousin Nadeem has a 4 year old laptop and he's sure
it needs more RAM. It has 8GB, a 1TB hard drive, and
takes almost 3 minutes to reach the desktop. He has about 5,000
rupees saved and a shopping list from a YouTube video. Sunday night
he called and said, I'm buying a RAM stick tonight. I said, wait.
I made him open Task Manager first. Disk usage was sitting at 100%
right after boot. Memory was only at 60%. That told me what I
needed to know. The hard drive was the slow part, not the RAM.
He didn't believe me at all. So I told him to watch the
Disk column for 5 minutes and call me back. My rule is simple.
If it's still a hard drive, buy the SSD first, no contest. If it's
already an SSD and Chrome plus VS Code choke on 8GB, go to 16GB. Check
the model before buying anything. Some laptops have soldered RAM, some only take SATA drives.
Look at the manual or the service sticker, don't guess from a shop's word. He
bought an SSD that night with a small USB case to clone the old drive.
The cloning took 2 hours and he sat watching it like a cricket
match. Next morning he sent me a screenshot of the desktop, loaded in about
15 seconds. He wrote, why didn't anyone tell me this earlier. I told him
3 times. He's still on 8GB and already complaining about 20 tabs, so
RAM is next. I told him one upgrade at a time, so he knows
what each one bought him. Has anyone here done both upgrades on one laptop?
Which one did you notice more? For me it was the SSD, by a mile, and I never regretted it.
