A lot of beginners waste too much time deciding between SQL and NoSQL instead of actually building. For most student projects, small teams, forums, e-commerce apps, or management systems, I’d default to Postgres.
Most applications have structured data and relationships: users have posts, posts have comments, and comments have likes. SQL databases handle these relationships naturally using primary keys, foreign keys, joins, and constraints.
MongoDB is useful when your data has a highly flexible structure, such as logs, analytics events, or content with very different fields. But you usually don’t need that flexibility for a typical project.
Another advantage is that modern Postgres supports JSONB, so you can keep structured relational data while storing flexible metadata or settings when needed.
My advice: don’t spend days debating. Pick Postgres, learn relationships and joins properly, and start building. Those SQL skills will help you in future projects and technical interviews.⚡
