I found an old match online last week and watched it on my laptop in Khobar
after dinner. It was from a long time ago. I just wanted something to put on in
the background. Within 10 minutes I'd stopped doing anything else. The players looked thinner, and the way
they walked was different. Nobody had the big shoulders and heavy arms I'm used to seeing now.
I called my friend Rizwan to talk about it, and he said it's all training now.
He said they have diet plans, recovery sessions, and scientists measuring their sleep. Fair point. I
argued back that those old players didn't have any of that and still turned up every day.
Maybe they worked just as hard, only with less help. Neither of us had proof. We
went around in circles for about 40 minutes. He thinks a player from that time would
struggle today. I think if you gave that player today's food and shoes, he'd be fine. We
couldn't settle it. The one thing we agreed on is that equipment matters, bats and shoes
and everything else. Even my own football boots from 2015 feel heavy next to the ones
my cousin bought last month. What I can't figure out is how you'd ever compare them fairly.
The game itself has changed too. Pitches are different, the rules are different, and the
crowds expect more now. So maybe the question doesn't have an answer. I still like arguing
about it though. Where do you land, better training, better gear, or a bit of both?
