There's one referee decision from a match nearly 10 years ago that still comes up
at every family gathering. My uncle brings it up first. My father disagrees within 5
seconds. Then they argue for about 10 minutes, with hand gestures, while the rest of
us eat. Somebody always changes the subject by asking if anyone wants more rice. My
uncle says the referee was blind. My father says the referee had a bad angle.
Neither one remembers the match properly. They each tell it a little differently every year.
In their versions the player moves about 2 metres more or less depending on who's
talking. I've heard it so many times that I could referee the argument myself, whistle
included. Last year I found the clip online and showed them both on my phone.
It was grainy, but you could see the whole thing. I thought that would finish it.
My uncle said "see, I told you." My father said "see, I told you." Same
clip. Both walked away happier than before. I just sat there holding my phone. This year
my father brought a printout of the match report to dinner. I'm not joking. My
uncle brought his own printed version of it. We ate in silence for a full minute.
My mother finally said both of them were wrong and took the plates away. Now my cousins
want to bet on who'll start it at the next gathering, and the loser pays for dinner.
