Noticed table tennis coming up considerably more often lately among adult friends specifically, several people mentioning joining local clubs or setting up a proper table at home themselves, which genuinely surprised me a little given how much the sport always felt more like a fairly casual childhood activity than anything adults would actually seek out deliberately and seriously themselves later in life.
Joined a local group myself a couple of months back purely out of curiosity after a colleague mentioned it repeatedly, and found it genuinely more physically demanding and considerably more strategically deep than I honestly remembered from playing casually as a kid, real fast reflexes required, along with actual genuine strategic thinking about specific shot placement that I never properly appreciated or even noticed myself back then as a casual young player.
What makes it particularly appealing as an actual adult specifically is how genuinely low impact it is on the body compared to some more demanding sports, considerably easier on joints and general overall fitness requirements than something like running or football, while still providing a genuinely solid, real cardiovascular workout during an actual proper match itself.
A friend who genuinely plays fairly seriously now mentioned local clubs have apparently seen a real, noticeable increase in specific adult membership recently, largely people in their thirties and forties actively looking for exactly this kind of lower impact but still genuinely engaging physical activity to actually take up again after years of relative general inactivity.
The social aspect has genuinely surprised me too, matches naturally invite easy conversation between points in a way that some other, more continuously fast paced sports genuinely do not really allow for in quite the same relaxed, natural specific way during actual play.
Has anyone else picked table tennis back up as an adult recently themselves, and did you find it considerably more physically and strategically demanding than you originally remembered from playing it casually as a kid yourself?
