Same eleven or twelve of us, more or less, every single Sunday morning for going on six years now. Jobs have changed, two people got married along the way, one moved cities entirely and still drives back most weekends purely to keep playing with this exact same specific group.
Nobody actually remembers precisely how the group first formed originally, some combination of a few original friends inviting others gradually, and eventually it just became a fixed, reliable weekly thing that nobody consciously decided to formally commit to, it simply happened naturally on its own over time. There is apparently an old group photo somewhere from the very first year, though nobody can actually agree anymore on exactly which specific Sunday it was taken.
We have watched each other's kids grow up along the sidelines, celebrated promotions, and quietly supported one specific member through a genuinely difficult divorce a couple of years back, mostly just by continuing to show up consistently every single week and giving him something completely normal and stable to actually look forward to during that specific rough stretch. Nobody made a big deal out of it directly, we simply kept the game going and let him decide how much he actually wanted to talk about it that particular morning.
The actual cricket itself has honestly gotten worse over the years if I am being fully honest about it, slower reflexes across the board, more careful, cautious playing generally, considerably more time spent complaining loudly about our own specific aches afterward than we probably used to. Nobody genuinely minds that decline though.
What we actually show up for at this point has quietly shifted well beyond the sport itself, and I suspect most of the group would keep meeting weekly this exact same way even if we eventually stopped playing cricket entirely and just sat around talking instead.
