Every Sunday at 6:30 in the morning, 11 or 12 of us show up at
the same ground. 6 years now. Jobs changed. Two of us got married. One guy moved
to another city and still drives back most weekends to play. Nobody remembers how it started.
A few friends invited a few friends, and one day it was just a fixed thing.
There's a photo from the first year somewhere. We argue about which Sunday it was taken.
We've watched each other's kids learn to walk on the boundary line. We've celebrated promotions with
cheap samosas. A couple of years back one of the group went through a divorce. Nobody
said much about it. We just kept the game going so he had one normal morning
a week. He talked when he wanted to. Some Sundays he said nothing and bowled badly.
Some Sundays he talked for an hour near the water tank. The cricket itself has gotten
worse. We're slower, more careful, and we complain about our knees for longer than we play.
Last month an easy catch came to me and I flinched and dropped it.
3 people laughed for 10 minutes. We have chai after, and the argument about
who bowled the worst over takes another half hour. I think some of us
would keep meeting even if we stopped playing and just sat on the steps.
A friend asked me last week why I never miss a Sunday, even when
I have a cold. I said because they'd notice. He said that sounds sad.
I said it isn't. We left it there. Anyway, if your group has a ground, a time and a regular
crowd, I'd like to hear about it. How long has yours lasted? Ours is 6 years and still counting, knees permitting.
