My uncle can apparently recall specific batting averages and bowling figures from matches played literally decades ago without any hesitation whatsoever, a genuinely encyclopedic memory for cricket statistics specifically that honestly puts my own memory for basically anything else in my regular daily life to genuine shame by direct comparison.
Every family gathering eventually turns into some version of him actually settling a minor disputed fact using some genuinely obscure specific statistic nobody else present had any real way of actually verifying or disputing themselves in the moment, and he is apparently right often enough that everyone has simply learned to just trust him completely on this particular specific topic without question at this point.
Asked him once directly how he actually retains all of this specific information so effortlessly, and his answer was refreshingly simple, he said he has genuinely followed the sport closely and consistently since childhood, and the actual statistics simply accumulate naturally in memory over that many decades of sustained, genuine attention and interest in the sport itself.
What strikes me most is how this specific kind of deep, focused knowledge seems to exist in basically every single family I actually know personally, someone who has genuinely become the unofficial, trusted authority on one very specific narrow topic, sports statistics being an especially common and popular one for this exact kind of role within most families generally.
My own father has a genuinely similar, if slightly less extensive, knowledge base himself, and watching the two of them occasionally debate some genuinely obscure specific historical match detail together is honestly one of my favorite recurring things to actually witness at any larger family gathering we happen to have together.
Does your own family have a specific relative like this too, and what particular topic have they actually become the unofficial trusted expert on within your own specific family circle over the years?
