My uncle in Hyderabad can tell you who opened the batting in a match
from before I was born. He doesn't look it up. He just closes his eyes
for 2 seconds and says it. Last Eid I was visiting, and my cousin
and I made a bet about an old final. We both pulled out our phones.
He kept sipping his tea and said, you'll find I'm right. He was right. My cousin lost 100
rupees and refused to pay, saying phones don't count. After that everyone treats my uncle like a search
engine. Someone asks a question and the room goes quiet. He enjoys it, though he pretends not to.
He leans back in the chair and waits a few seconds. Then he gives the
answer plus 3 things nobody asked for, including who was injured that week. I once
asked how he remembers all this. He said he followed every match on the radio first.
He said when you only hear it, you build the picture yourself, and you never forget
it. I don't know if that's true, but I tried it with a song I was learning
and it stuck. He can't remember where he's kept his glasses though. They're usually on his head.
My father has a smaller version of this. He knows about 10 old matches very
well and nothing after. When the two of them talk, it sounds like a different
language. I just nod and refill the tea. I live in Jeddah now and I
miss that more than I thought I would. Does your family have one of these people?
What are they the expert on?
