On Friday night I started a Korean drama because my sister kept going
on about them. I said I'd watch 2 episodes before bed. I finished
all 16 by Sunday evening. I barely left the couch except to eat.
My daughter asked if I was ill and I said no. I've heard about
K-dramas for years and always thought they'd be too slow for me. I was wrong.
The slowness is the whole thing. Characters stand in a doorway and say nothing. A small
gesture, a hand on a sleeve, carries more than a whole page of dialogue in other shows.
I usually watch faster Western stuff, and this was like switching from a highway to a lane.
I didn't expect to like a lane this much. By episode 5 I'd stopped checking
my phone, which almost never happens. The ending is the part I can't shake. I
won't spoil anything. One character makes a choice in the final episode, and it wasn't shocking.
It was just quiet. No big music swell, no speech. They just did it, and I sat
there for a full minute. Days later I'm still turning it over while I stir the tea.
I told my sister, and it turns out she's been watching them for years. She
sent me a list of 5 more shows that she thinks I'd like. I'd like
something with real feeling but not the loud, over the top kind some people mention.
So if you have a quiet one, send it. My sister's list starts tonight.
