I can't remember the last time a comedy made me laugh out loud alone in
my flat. Usually I just think, okay, that's clever, and move on with my evening.
Last week I put on a small stand up special I knew nothing about. There
was no buzz around it. I picked it because the thumbnail looked cheap and friendly.
About 20 minutes in, the comedian did a long bit about family WhatsApp groups.
The uncle who sends good morning pictures, the aunt who replies to everything with one
thumbs up. I laughed so hard I had to put the phone down. Tears. Actual
noise. My neighbour texted me, are you okay? She could hear me through the wall.
I told 2 friends to watch it. One laughed at exactly the same places
I did. The other said it was fine, nothing special. She sat through the
whole thing with a straight face. It made me think comedy is the most personal
thing there is. You can't recommend it. I only laughed because my family group
chat is that exact mess, with a different uncle. I don't think the material
was clever or new. It was just true in a way that I already knew.
The big topics, work and marriage and money, don't land like a small thing does.
A tiny, boring detail from my own life told back to me. That's what gets me.
I've watched that same bit 3 times since then. The neighbour has stopped texting me, thankfully.
