Last Sunday I fell down a hole of old Doordarshan clips and didn't come out until 11 at night.
It started with 1 theme song I'd forgotten. Then the next one. Then I was making tea and still watching.
I used to watch these as a kid when we had about 2 channels and a very bad antenna.
It's embarrassing how many title tunes I could still hum without looking up.
What hit me is how slow everything was. A scene would stay on someone's face for 5 seconds.
People talked in full sentences and took their time. Nobody rushed to the next plot point.
I think part of it was that nobody had a choice. There was nothing else to switch to.
But I also think the makers trusted us to sit still. I'm not sure shows do that now.
I told my parents about the clips on the phone and my mother lit up like a bulb.
She talked for a full hour. Which episode, which actor, what the neighbour said the next morning.
My father remembered scenes better than I did and described them with his hands.
I had to put my cup down because I was laughing so hard at his impression of one character.
I don't think those shows would work today. People would swipe away in 20 seconds.
Still, it felt nice to watch something that doesn't scream for my attention.
Do you ever go back to old Doordarshan stuff? What was the first show you remember?
If you have a good clip, I might lose another evening.
