I started Panchayat again from season one last week, mostly because I wanted something light before
sleeping. The first time I watched it, I treated it as a nice comedy about a village.
This time I noticed how much of the humour comes from silence and very small facial expressions.
Sachiv ji looking at his phone on the roof tells you more than five pages of
dialogue. What surprised me is that the early episodes feel quieter than the later seasons. The bottle
gourd episode made me laugh louder than I did in 2020, and I did not expect that.
The side characters also feel more important now, especially the assistant who always has
the best line. I used to think season one was slow, but now I
think it is the most honest of them. My mother joined me for two
episodes and had her own opinions about the whole thing. She said real village
offices never run so smoothly and that the show makes everyone far too polite.
I told her that is exactly why it works, because the world in it is a little
kinder than ours. She was not convinced and went off to watch her serial, which I understand
completely. Now I am wondering whether rewatching is always better than the first watch for gentle shows. With
thrillers I lose interest once I know the twist, but comfort shows seem to grow on me.
I tried the same thing with another series last month and it did not hold up at all.
Which show have you rewatched and enjoyed more the second time?
