☕ Started rewatching Friends after years, some jokes land very differently now

Decided to rewatch Friends from the very beginning last month, mostly out of comfort viewing during a genuinely stressful work stretch, something familiar and predictable to have on in the background after long days rather than starting anything new that would require actual sustained attention from me. What struck me rewatching it now, well into actual adulthood myself with considerably more life experience than I had the first time I originally watched it as a teenager, is how differently certain specific jokes and storylines actually land this time around. Some moments that felt purely funny back then now read as genuinely dated or occasionally uncomfortable given how attitudes and general awareness around certain specific topics have shifted considerably since the show originally aired decades ago now. That said, the actual core friendship dynamic between the six main characters still genuinely holds up remarkably well, the specific comedic timing and delivery still lands effectively regardless of when any individual episode happens to have originally aired, which says something genuinely notable about the fundamental writing and performances themselves beyond just the specific dated jokes scattered throughout it. Watching it with my partner, who is seeing the show for the actual first time herself, has been genuinely interesting too, she has pointed out several specific things that never even registered with me previously, mostly related to how differently certain relationship dynamics and gender related jokes read now compared to when the show actually first aired originally. We have had a few genuinely good conversations directly comparing how comedy from that era differs from what actually gets written and produced now, which was honestly not something I expected a simple comfort rewatch to actually lead into this directly. Has anyone else rewatched an old favorite recently and noticed a similarly mixed reaction, still funny in the moments that genuinely matter, but occasionally jarring in ways you did not originally notice or register the first time you actually watched it yourself?

The core friendship dynamic really is what holds it together honestly, strip away the dated specific jokes and the six of them still feel completely believable as an actual group of close friends, which is honestly harder to write well than most people probably realize. Plenty of ensemble shows since have tried copying that same formula and mostly just felt hollow by direct comparison.

Rewatched this myself last year and had the exact same reaction, some jokes genuinely made me wince a little now in a way they clearly did not back when I first watched the show originally as a teenager myself. Strange feeling, actually, watching something age in real time alongside your own changing sense of what actually counts as genuinely funny anymore.
