🎥 True crime documentaries have gotten genuinely excessive in numbers this year

Opened a couple of the major streaming platforms recently just to browse for something new to actually watch, and was genuinely struck by just how many true crime documentaries and dramatized series are apparently currently available, entire dedicated sections now exist specifically for the genre in a way that honestly did not seem quite this dominant even just a couple of years back. Watched a handful myself over the past year, genuinely found a couple of them well made and thoughtfully handled with real sensitivity toward victims and their families involved, but several others felt considerably more exploitative, leaning heavily into genuinely lurid, sensationalized specific details purely for shock value rather than any real, meaningful examination of the actual underlying case or its broader context. What genuinely bothers me most is how some of these specific productions seem to profit fairly directly from real, genuine tragedy involving actual real families who may not have consented meaningfully, or at all, to having their specific personal story turned into entertainment content consumed casually by millions of people during a regular evening at home. Mentioned this concern to a friend who genuinely enjoys the specific genre a lot more than I personally do, and she made a reasonable counterpoint that some of these documentaries have actually led to real, genuine renewed attention on unsolved cases or exposed real systemic issues within actual law enforcement that might have otherwise simply remained ignored and forgotten entirely without that specific kind of coverage. That is a fair point honestly, and I do not think the genre itself is inherently bad or wrong as a whole, but the sheer specific volume currently available does make me wonder whether streaming platforms are simply chasing a proven, reliably successful specific formula regardless of whether each individual new specific case genuinely warrants this kind of extensive dramatized treatment at all. Where do people here personally draw the line between genuinely thoughtful true crime content worth actually watching versus content that feels more exploitative purely for entertainment value, and has that specific personal line shifted at all for you as the sheer overall volume has clearly increased?

There is a slightly uncomfortable irony in how casually we consume all this over dinner, real tragedy playing quietly in the background of an otherwise completely ordinary evening at home for most of us watching. A friend pointed that out to me directly last year and I have not quite been able to unnotice it since then, no matter how hard I try.

Watched one recently that interviewed the original investigating officer at length, and it changed how procedurally careful the whole thing felt compared to the usual breathless narration most of these default to instead of doing that kind of legwork before releasing anything at all to a wider paying audience each time one comes out somewhere new like this one did.

Victim consent is the exact line for me too. A documentary made with family cooperation feels completely different from one assembled purely from court records and old news footage, nobody involved ever consulted about how their own tragedy gets narrated to strangers over dinner on a random weeknight somewhere far away from where it originally happened years earlier to real people.
